A magnitude 7,7 earthquake struck at the epicenter of 10km from the 27km distance Northeast of Donggala, Central Sulawesi on 28/9/2018 at 17.02 WIB. The source of the earthquake came from Palu Karo fault line. BMKG activated an early tsunami warning on 28/9/2018 at 17.07 WIB.

The Earthquake had a potential for tsunami in the coastal areas:

1. Western Region of Donggala with the Warning Status

2. Northern Region of Donggala with the Advisory Status

3. Northern Region of Mamuju with the Advisory Status

4. Western Region of Palu City with the Advisory Status

The Warning Status means that the local government is expected to take attention and direct the civilians to evacuate as soon as possible. The Alert Status means that the local government should direct the civillians to steer clear of the beach areas and riverbanks.

Based on direct visual observation and results from measurement by marine devices, for 30 minutes, there was no sign of  changes to the sea level and no sign of tsunami. So BMKG announced that early tsunami warning ended on 28/9/2018 at 17.39 WIB. Therefore no tsunami occured. All conditions were safe and civilians are able to go back to their homes.

The impact of the magnitude 7.7 earthquake was strongly felt. Based on the analysis, earthquakes shocks were felt around Palu City area until northern region of Donggala District with the intensity of the earthquake VI-VII MMI (strong to very strong). Some of the areas in Donggala such as Parigi, Kasimbar, Tobolf, Toribulu, Dongkalang, Sabang, and Tinombo had the intensity of VI-VII MMI. It is estimated around this area many damages occurred.

 

BNPB Command Post continues the coordination with BPBD,TNI,Polri, Basarnas, and other SKPD. The head of BNPB has ordered the Rapid Response Team of BNPB to immediately mobilise to the location of disaster.

Initial reports say that many buildings collapsed due to the magnitude 7.7 earthquake. Many people panicked and ran out of their houses. When the early tsunami warning was activated, people moved to safer areas. Data collection is still ongoing even until now. Aftershocks continue to occur with less power.

All civilians must remain vigilant. It is advised to stay out of houses or buildings due to the fact that the aftershocks could potentially become dangerous. All civilians should gather in safer areas. Avoid hillsides where landslides can easily occur. Keep using the official information from BMKG, BNPB, and BPBD.

A magnitude 6 earthquake struck Donggala, with the epicenter located inland, 2 KM in northern direction of Donggala City with a depth of 10 Km on Friday, September 28 2018, at 14.00 WIB. The source of the earthquake came from Palu Koro vault line. Initial report from BPBD Donggala District identified 1 fatality, 10 injuries and dozens of damaged houses. The casualty was caused by collapsing building.

Evacuations are still ongoing. Data collection and emergency operations are currently ongoing.
